Why Fences are Built on Sand Dunes

Sand dune fences on the Outer BanksWhile in the Outer Banks of North Carolina I learned the answer to something that had always piqued my curiosity.

Why are there fences on sand dunes? Clearly not for marking territory…we’ll leave to the dogs (did I take it too far?).

Fences on the sand dune at the Outer Banks NCTurns out fences build up the dune. They create alleys for the wind to blow sand into and for plants to grow roots. To help the dune along, folks throw in Christmas trees because they collect sand quickly and fill a lot of space. Good tidings to you.

What factoid can you share about the beach?

Thanks for your interest in subscribing to my blog, Americana the Beautiful. Sorry to hear you’re having troubles with the RSS feed.

Which button did you click?
There’s one in the header that works no problem – it says “subscribe to our RSS”
and there’s a small button in the “subscribe” section on the right – that was just installed and may have some bugs to work through.

Please let me know which you tried, try the top one and be in touch. I’ll then connect with the guy who built the site and work out the kinks!
