You May THINK You Like Elephants…

…but not nearly as much as Mr. Ed does (did?).

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
[insert brooding music] The setting for the Civil War’s bloodiest battle.
[insert lively, ironic music] And a collection of over 12,000 elephant figurines.

Think the two don’t really fit together in a single day? Think again! You’re traveling with Paula, where quirky and history are old friends.

You Have HOW Many Elephants?

12,000 give or take. Just your average collection. Mr. Ed collected some 8,000 on his own; lost 2,000 in a fire; and a benefactor gave him 4,000 more from her own collection when she heard about him. It takes all kinds.

What comprises his collection?

  • Two nearly full-size pachyderms
  • Figurines smaller than a thumb-tack and on-up in size
  • Salt and pepper shakers
  • Liquor bottles
  • Cookie jars
  • Toothbrush holders
  • Napkin holders
  • Planters
  • Tables
  • Mugs

Mr. Ed's Elephants

Mr. Ed's Elephants

What materials are they made of? ivory, jade, porcelain, ceramic, plastic, glass, wicker (yup, wicker). I had an overwhelming feeling of being in the movie Forest Gump when Bubba talks about all the ways to prepare shrimp.

“Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that’s about it.”

That’s about it for me, too. Not much else to say–even though there were 12,000 elephants. I didn’t count; I took their word.

What’s the best/craziest/funniest collection you’ve ever seen?
One of my faves is the Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum.

Fascinating – I also collect elephants. Now I only need 11983 more

Haha! Like the comparison to Bubba in Forrest Gump. 🙂
