And THIS is Why I’m Traveling Now

It’s just a two mile round-trip hike to Hamilton Pool, an hour outside of Austin Texas, but it’s steep in parts and the path is an obstacle course of rocks and tree roots. It’s worth it: the destination is a swimming hole partly housed within a cavern, complete with stalactites and moss.

While on this mini-trek, I thought about my decision to travel cross-country now, instead of at official retirement. This hike is the perfect illustration of why my decision is right for me. Once at the “proper” retirement age, my faculties will surely be different. I can’t say for sure that this hike would be off the list, but it’s likely. And with age, rumor has it, will come a security of self that I don’t have now, despite valiant efforts. I might be more willing to sing karaoke then than I am now. I guess I’ll just have to take the trip again…

This is the beauty that awaited and inspired me on a cloudy December day.

Walking around the back of the cavern. A tight squeeze.

The water was 57 degrees and these dudes were compelled to go swimming. Bless their testosterone-filled hearts.

Swim at your own risk.

How do you travel differently than you did 15 years ago?

I travel more–aside from the fact that I’m traveling full time. I had seven trips planned for 2012 before I decided to take this trip.

These are gorgeous beyond belief. You will have left a fabulous record for your grandchildren, who will marvel at how intrepid Grandma was to have taken out on her own for a year in an RV to celebrate her 40th birthday. Go, girl!

I concur with Jeannine. We think alike, though I’m not certain I’d have thought to use “intrepid”. “Go, girl” is right…I’m seriously impressed with each passing blog. Your parents must have enormous respect for your research, tenacity, accomplishments, organizational skills, and writing talent.

Raye – if you see my parents, be sure to tell them thanks

Is there a time of the year when the weather is hotter than the guys?
